   This was our second visit to Xel-ha. We attempted it when our son was six, and it was just too challenging for him, especially as a non-swimmer. Now that he’s 11, we thought he might be able to do more of the activities there. It was definitely better the second time around, though not without some challenges. He loved the water slide; having researched this in advance, we let him do the blue slide only as the white slide is very fast and we read some people got disoriented or hit their head on the landing. (We saw enough reviews like this to make us concerned). But the blue wasn’t super fast, and the landing was gentle; there are also lifeguards in the water at the bottom. I went up twice with him for the view, which was outstanding.

   This was my son’s first time snorkeling, and it was such a gentle place to learn; he loved it. We did see plenty of fish, even though the water was a little cloudy, but we also hung near crowds and shore; I’ve heard it’s better out by the floating bridge. We brought our own masks and snorkels since we had them, and just borrowed fins and life jackets.

   We skipped the river float as we heard it was a long way to get there and a long, slow float back, and my son chose to do the water slide instead.

   We paid extra for the zip cycle activity. I loved it for the scenery and the unique experience, though felt it was a little overhyped. The parrots you see early in the ride are lovely but they are fastened to a tree, and we saw the container they came in and a worker below. We didn’t see other parrots or birds, but we did cycle through a cave with bats!! We felt safe the whole way, and the ride never felt higher than a ski lift, if that. It was fun to go over cenotes and grottoes and through the vegetation. The cycle was easy enough to use, but it’s not a Disney ride – you are powering it – and my son struggled at the end because you have to get up a little hill, and going past the “checkpoint” (posts) requires a bit more power too. He got really stuck on that last hill a couple minutes before the end of the line and I had no way to help him except to shout encouragement. They do give you walkie talkies in your bike (hanging from the roof in a bag) and say to press the yellow button if you need help. I did this repeatedly, thinking someone might be near enough to see if he was having a legitimate mechanical issue. Nobody came. Five minutes later, and after holding up a line of people behind us, my son gave it one last big push and managed to get over the hump. But it soured his mood on the experience for sure. A boy getting off soon after us – same age – was nearly in tears, having also had similar challenges. It’s not an impossible challenge, but I’m not sure I’d take a kid younger than 10 because of the extra effort required near the end. And I wouldn’t go at the end of the day – go earlier when your legs are fresh!

   The floating bridge is something you walk across to get to the quieter jungle side and the zip cycle; it’s beautiful over there, but if anyone in your party has any balance or depth perception issues, as does my husband, this bridge will be a real challenge because the water is quite rough at that end of the lagoon – the bridge was really bucking. My husband was not able to join us on that other side. You can go to the river ride beginning and get to the jungle side that way, but it takes longer.

   We’ve done Xcaret several times too, and if you had to choose between the two, I would recommend Xcaret – more variety of activities for all ages and abilities, more respite from the shade, more encounters with wildlife. But I’m glad we tried Xel-ha again and really pleased the snorkeling worked out there.

   I really wish both Xel-ha and Xcaret would discontinue dolphin encounters. For parks that are otherwise so committed to the environment and sustainability (both parks are pristine and support conservation in other ways), it makes no sense to continue to offer this unethical attraction. Seeing the dolphins in the small pens at Xel-ha – and seeing group after group with dolphins from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm – made us very sad.

   We had a lot of fun with our family of three on our day in Xel-Ha. As mentioned by someone previously, when we bought “all-inclusive” we thought we wouldn’t need any money, so we brought none. We were pretty happy with what was included, but you should bring cash or a credit card. Also, just be aware that the drive to and from is longer than expected, and at the end of the long day it seems even longer. Pablito, who was our guide on the bus in the morning was great.

   We recently took a tour which began at Tulum and the second half of the day was at Xel-ha. Highly recommend! It was important for us to expose our grandsons to the history at Tulum and they enjoyed it very much. Ending the day at Xel-ha was great. The lazy river, zip lines and ropes course were a favorite. The weather was a bit windy so the lazy river was alot of work, especially the last half hour or so getting to the end. Snorkeling was fun too! Half a day is plenty of time. The buffets were very good and had something for all.

   This was the second time I was here and it was even better than the last time. Everything apart from a couple of things are included. It’s wise to ask beforehand. It will be an active day where you can fly in wires, go slowly through the beautiful mangrove, you can swimm a lot of nice places and you will see a big variation of fish. You don’t go here for the food but really that’s a minor thing compared to the beautiful surroundings. It’s a must if you are near this place. It’s for sure worth a drive

   This was a disappointment. Eveyting we wanted to do cost extra money. The cenote was fun but there wasn’t a lot to do after that.
