If, like me, you visited Xel-Ha 30+ years ago, be prepared for a shock. Corporate moguls have turned it into an amusement park, with a water slide, dolphins, lazy river, etc. And even discounted admission is $80/person. The price is “all inclusive”: i.e. you get snorkeling equipment, a locker that locks, towels, beach toys and–it must be said–a pretty damn good buffet with an enormous variety of food, seafood and drinks included. It also must be said that Xel Ha still delivers good snorkeling: later in the day, we visited Yal ku Lagoon in Akumal, and saw nowhere near the fish we saw at Xel Ha, including a 40-50 lbs prowling barracuda and several sting rays. For fish Xel-Ha’s proximate ocean inlet makes all the difference. So although $80 is, by my reckoning, a double sawbuck too expensive, I’m still glad I returned to take a look. Just don’t go on the weekend, when the locals and their kiddies jam the place, and it’ll take you at least 20 minutes to get your admission tickets.

At first, we thought it was very expensive ($90 USD per person) but, if you get in early, for this price, you can enjoy buffet breakfast, lunch, early dinner, all drinks, a locker, free snorkeling equipment, all amenities all day…food was great, they are not cheap when serving drinks so be careful, park is impeccable and there are a lot of things to do so you will have no problem spending the entire day there. A definite “must see” if you are in the area. The staff is always smiling and wiling to help. There is an area for small children, you can come down the river (beware as this activity will take you more than one hour), swim in the lagoon…all in all a fantastic day.

While the price of admission may seem like a lot, the all-inclusive ticket was well worth it for a great day trip “off-resort”.
We booked transportation to and from our resort as well, and were picked up on time on a large, clean bus. The bus got us to the park as it opened, which meant no lines to get in and no lines to the lighthouse or river at all!
We spent most of our time in the water and just visited the buffet for lunch – standard quality buffet fare but lots of choices.
I was impressed by the organization of the park facilities – they have thought of most everything. Admission includes free access to lockers, unlimited towels on demand, snorkel equipment, bikes to take up the jungle path, and enough activities to keep you busy all day.
One of the main activities is to walk, bike, or tram up a jungle path to the top of the freshwater river, and then snorkel or float on inner tubes back down to the main inlet. We came prepared with a waterproof bag, but they also provide a service to “check” anything you don’t want to take in the water and they drive it back down to the main part of the park while you’re swimming.
They also have clearly made efforts to be sustainable, like providing re-usable glasses for drinks instead of using paper/plastic.
The lighthouse provides an amazing view, but one small complaint is that we weren’t allowed to bring our (waterproof, shockproof) camera with us when going up – presumably because they want you to use their built in camera systems.
I have to admit, if you don’t mind the extra cost it is sleek – you can scan your wristband many spots to have you picture taken at scenic stops throughout the park.
The park is gorgeous and the river/inlet snorkeling was worth the trip in itself.

This place is an absolute can’t miss on your adventures. A lazy river float, cliff jumps, cenotes, caves, snorkelling, dolphins, zip lines, water slides, under water walks. You name it they have it plus hammocks and loungers everywhere! We will definitely be back again and again. Spend a full day there, it is absolutely worth it!

We went to Xel-Ha as we thought it would be a good place for our 4 year old son to practice his snorkeling (calmer water than the ocean in front of our hotel). He did enjoy the snorkeling and didn’t have to venture very far away from the entrance stairs to see all kinds of fish, and some really big fish (as you can feed them at this particular set of stairs). My son also enjoyed the floating bridge and the children’s playground area. It was nice having all of our food included and not having to worry about having your money with you. They have a locker area so you can lock up everything you’re not using at the time which allows you to just enjoy the park. We’ll have to go back as we didn’t get over to the other side of the lagoon and our son was too young to experience some of the other attractions Xel-Ha has to offer. All in all, it was a good day.
