With the seaweed problem in Tulum I was looking for a place for my friend and I to go that offered swimming and some adventure nearby. From the imagery and reviews on Trip Advisor we ended up going to Xel Ha. Entrance fee was $117 each (similar to Universal Studios). The park was clean and the food was good and plentiful. There were nice places to sit and towels were provided. Life vests are mandatory. Other than walking around and swimming everything else is an upsell. Photos, zip lines, dolphin show, manatee exhibit, etc. etc. It’s like going to Disney, paying the entrance fee and being charged to go onto Space Mountain each time. By mid day, with so many people in the lagoon, the water was totally cloudy from the sand. The few fish that I saw snorkeling were boring. With all of the huge iguanas running around it was like a cross between a third world waterpark, Wallyworld and Jurassic Park (after the dinosaurs took over). If you are in the least bit adventurous you will absolutely hate this place. If you like to sit in the sun and have your kids eat and swim the day away, then maybe this is your place (if you want to spend that much money). For me it was a near total disappointment.

If you are in Cancun or Playa del Carmen you must visit this place. It’s beautifully set and very peaceful. Have a walk around the park or take a little train or bike from one end to the other. Enjoy natural lazy river, have a snorkel, jump from the cliff or just relax by the reaver. All food and drinks are included. Park is well organised and snorkels, towels and lockers are provided. Make sure to take waterproof cover for your phone to photograph your experience. There is also plenty of photo points if you want to purchase photos from the park and prices are reasonable.
Lovely, relaxing day out.

We booked through TUI and were picked up at 7.55am and arrived before the crowds so entrance was quick and easy. We went straight to the kiosk and booked the Zip bikes. Then went and got our lockers. We were advised by the Xel-ha rep on the couch to go straight to the far end of the park to the start of the River. We used the train to get there as its quite a walk to that park of the park. There’s free use of snorkels, masks, flippers and life vests all day. This was our first experience of snorkeling. We were pretty much the first people in the river and so glad we did it first as it gets quite busy and is very narrow at the start. We absolutely loved seeing all the fish and wildlife in the river and then the bay.
All the food and drink is included in the price of your ticket. There’s plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. The food is by no means gourmet but its nice enough with plenty of choice. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner and had something different each time.
After our breakfast we went to the Zip bikes that we had booked (There’s lots of other activities to book but they are very pricey). We booked this because it was something different that we hadn’t done before. You’re given a quick briefing and issued with a helmet then strapped into your bike and away you go. It’s a brilliant, fun and different way to see the park and some of the wildlife but doesn’t last very long for the price.
After we did this we went up the giant slides. The views from the top are amazing. Surprisingly the wait isn’t to bad as there’s 4 slides.
After lunch we made our way round the park going on the Zip lines, cliff jumps and rope swings (a bit naff as it doesn’t swing very far and isn’t high at all) which there are many. Also we walked round the garden with parrots and exotic plants, taking as many pictures as we could.
After we had done all this there was still an hour or so left, so we decided to snorkel again and take in as much of the inlet bay as we could. There’s a giant tap feature in the middle of the bay and that’s where all the fish seem to congregate. Also there’s fish food boxes on the shore line, chuck some in while the family are snorkeling it’s brilliant.
After snorkeling there was just time to grab 1 more meal before leaving. On leaving the park you go and see any rep dressed in red tshirts and they direct you to the right bus for your hotel.
You can purchase a photo package which we did at a different X park but even with a TUI discount we didn’t think it was worth it. Got better pics with our phones.
TIPS
Get there early
Do the snorkeling River first
Take water shoes and waterproof pouch for your phone
Take plenty of money if you want to do all the activities

This place is a reason to come to Mexico in itself. Expensive, but totally worth the price of admission. Once you are inside the park, everything is included – meals (food is good) snorkeling equipment (good quality) and all the activities. Of course you can add experiences, but you don’t need to. The place is so big and there is so much to do that you need to spend a full day at the park to experience it.
