Our family booked a combination tour of Xel-Ha and Tulum. We have two daughters, ages 9 and 12. I looked at dozens of reviews for Xcaret and Xel-Ha prior to our trip, trying to decide which would be the best choice for our family. We chose Xel-Ha because we thought the kids would enjoy the adventurous activities, and my husband and I liked the idea of seeing Tulum at the same time. Xel-Ha was a fun place, and my 4 star rating is based on that activity. Tulum was a big miss for us though. Here are my thoughts/comments on both:
1. Tulum was hot!!! We live in Florida, so heat and humidity are normal for us. Tulum might be a nice place to visit in February, but I would NEVER recommend going there in July. My kids actually felt sorry for the Mayan people who had to live with this kind of heat!
2. Tulum is free to Mexicans on Sundays. I did not know this little fact until our tour guide told us to expect big crowds. I had intentionally booked this excursion on a Sunday because I heard it was a good day to go to Xel-Ha, but I didn’t do the research on Tulum. If you decide to go to Tulum (hopefully in winter), don’t go on Sunday!
3. Just a recommendation, but I wish I had stayed south of Cancun. We stayed in the Hotel Zone, and the bus ride to Xel-Ha and Tulum was so LONG. It took at least 2 hours each way, which made an already long day so much longer. The other excursions that we did during our vacation were also south of Cancun, so I wish we had looked at hotels in Riviera Maya or Playa del Carmen.
4. Xel-Ha was fun. It was not amazing, but it was a pleasant way to spend the day. The cool water was such a welcome relief after the heat at Tulum. The snorkeling was just OK. I have snorkeled in Belize and the Florida Keys (both amazing), and this was nothing special. However, it was still pleasant to spend the day swimming in cool water and looking for fish. We especially enjoyed the stops for cliff jumping, zip lining, and the water obstacle courses.
5. With the Tulum tour included, we arrived at Xel-Ha around noon. We ate lunch, changed clothes, and completed every “included” activity by the time our bus left at 6:00. We were a bit rushed at the end, but we got it all done. If we had spent the day only at Xel-Ha, I think we would have run out of activities. I probably would have been tempted to spend extra money on one of the other activities to fill our time.
6. We scanned our bracelets for pictures, but we didn’t end up buying any. When we looked at our pictures at the end of the day, there were a few good ones, but most of them were off on the timing. (For example, it only caught our foot on the slide, or it caught one of us right before we jumped off the cliff.) We even had some pictures of strangers, and I am not sure how that happened. I think we could have done better. Some people in my family were better at remembering to scan their bracelets, and some people were better at looking at the camera and smiling. A little more effort on our part might have made the pictures worthwhile.

Xel-Ha had enough inclusive activities for us to spend the day without having to pay for any extras. The jungle walk and river ride were a lot of fun, there are lots of spots to snorkel. There is also a very good selection of food and drink at various diners.
All in all, a great day, and we were all tired and ready for the bus home.

This was such a great experience as this was my first park in Cancun I can defiantly say it’s worth it!

Just like xcaret hotel and xcaret park fantastic.
Relaxing ride on the floating seats, bit busy where u get on them but then opens up into a huge area. Jumped out of our seats and swam for hours, snorkeling looking at the lovely fish. Couple of activities u pay for but others are free including lovely food and drink stalls everywhere. Loved it, it’s a must visit place.

So my boyfriend likes to be kept busy and doing stuff and wow this was the perfect place to go … none stop activities to do all day !
The park it’s self is beautiful so natural whether cliff jumping, rope swinging or snorkelling nothing was disappointing even the lazy river was exciting … the food delicious all you can eat buffet . Honestly one of the best places I have ever visited .
