I’ve been the Cancun area a dozen times over the last 10 years and had never made it to Xel-Ha, and I very angry it took me so long to get there!
The place is flat out awesome.
My wife, kids (14 & 12) and I had the all-inclusive full day ticket and the only bad thing I can say about it is there was not enough time in the day to do it all!
We added on (for an extra cost) the Swimming with the Dolphin experience – TOTALLY worth it! – the Zip Bikes…cool, glad I did it, but wouldn’t do it again…and the photo pass (more on this later).
We started the day with the “adventure river”…and I probably missed it, but this is more than just a lazy river and you could honestly spend 4 hours just on this.
The start is pretty far away from the main entrance, it seemed like a 20 min walk…although there was a shuttle that you can pick up, that we missed.
Once on the river though, you can tube lazily the whole way down, or put on snorkel gear and get at that right away, or do both…AND there are “stops” along the way with cliff jumping and a little ropes/ and zip line area.
We had a 11:30 reservation with the dolphins – which again was great – but it made is cut the river part shorter.
The food was buffet style and very good.
After the river, lunch and dolphin experience we did the lighthouse slides and walked towards the cenotes (can’t swim in them) and did the zip bikes…which were just that, bikes you “rode” on lines in the jungle canopy. It took about 15 minutes and we saw cool stuff…I’m glad I did it, but I am not sure I’d pay to do that again.
After all that we had a little more time to snorkel before it was time to go.
My advice to myself if I was going to to this again would be to spend two days there
Day 1 would be with no extra activities…just do what is included and spend WAY more time in the adventure river part. I’d then decide what add-ons I would want to do.
Day 2 – to the half day trip and only do the add ons.
It was seriously fun and the only bad thing I can say is one day was not enough time for my family to really enjoy it all!

The most amazing, beautiful and fun park ever!!!!! I loved everything about the park especially the lazy river just taking all that sun and enjoying the beautiful views just breathe taking. I wish we could take our phones up to the slide even though we bought the photo pass I would of like to take more pictures. The food was good but the drinks were better!!! Thank you we will be back!!!!

All in all, our family had a great time at Xel-Ha. While it was crowded, we were able to get a table and food at the buffet relatively quickly when we wanted to eat. We did basically all of the included activities and added on the Zip Bike – which I don’t think was worth the additional cost, personally. A few things that I had read in other places were not true so just wanted to give some pointers:
– We had brought reef-safe sunscreen based on other reviews I had read – no one ever checked this at the park. I would definitely still use this sunscreen, as you are in the water with reefs and fish, but I was under the impression that they checked everyone.
– there is nothing to see while snorkeling in the river, so we used the floats instead. There is not much of a current in a lot of the river and you are kind of tipped forward sitting in the float, so it can be slow/a lot of work. That said, there IS a strong current in other parts, which can make things difficult. We especially noticed this when trying to ‘pull over’ for one of the attractions or swim back from cliff diving.
– water shoes would be ideal. You can bring your own or buy there.
– there is no deposit for the snorkel gear. It is free/included. If you lose it, it’s $25.
– recommend that families set a meeting place – it’s fairly easy to get separated on the river if you are all in separate floats.
– snorkeling was kind of sad. There were lots of fish but poor visibility and basically no color to any of the reefs (this is just climate change/human-related and no fault of the park but very depressing to see). We did see two very large rays. The kids still really enjoyed the snorkeling.

I had so wonderful experience. My hotel was in the Hotel Zone and I purchased the transportation with the admission ticket. The bus picked me up at 7:20a and dropped me at the park at 9:36a. I had to transfer to another bus in downtown Cancun.
The park was super nice. I had a 6 years old kid and she was depleted when coming back to the hotel. So she slept well. 🙂
I recommend buying paid activities together with the admissions when purchasing them online. On-site ticket booth price was more expensive than the online price. But not all paid activities are sold online.
