We decided to go even with covid. Was a great decision. Thenpark was great…river clean. We did snorkel and snuba.paid for the picture package..can be pricey..but was well worth it. new birds section was beautiful. The night show was awesome and Alejandro our waiter was the best. And i have never had better food. I wanted more.

A great experience for the most part. Employees mostly did a good job of enforcing social distancing and giving out hand gel, etc. Everything was great until we got into the underground river. That’s when everyone seemed to forget COVID 19 is a thing that still exists. We were funneled together into a line leading into the lagoon where you started your trip down the river. This doesn’t happen until you are down there and turning back would have made you have to walk through a group of people. To actually wade in you had to make your way past people who were standing on and around the steps leading into the lagoon and tour groups taking pictures. Once in the water we were again surrounded by groups of people, almost shoulder to shoulder. It isn’t until you’ve gone a considerable distance that you’re able to separate from the families and tour groups that are floating together. I knew we were taking a risk by going but we decided on xcaret because they advertise stringent enforcement of preventive methods. The employees would remind visitors to stay apart and keep masks on (one even pointed out that my youngest’ had pulled his mask down). However they completely forewent all of this in the underground river activity. They must control the flow of visitors going into the river just as they do for everything else. We are rigidly quarantining at home for the next 2 weeks and hoping for the best.

We did a one day pass to the park. I went there mostly because I had seen videos on the snorkeling and all the fish in the water. But the snorkeling was a let down! Too many people in a small space. The place had a lot of animals and the interactions were all at an additional price. We spent some time on the beach and ate at the restaurant by the snorkeling area which was really nice and had good food! We did the picture package which I though was a good deal and we got a lot of candid shots! We also dinner the dinner show, food was amazing but the show was kinda boring and it was too loud to even enjoy the singing, I would not recommend with children as mine was itching to go! Show was 2 hours and we ended up leaving after the dessert was served.
I would not recommend buying the unlimited pass to this park as you could do it all in one day, we also went to Xelha which I thought was better.

This review is not meant to be a complain or to point fingers to the staff or the park by any means. It has the purpose to inform the public what happened to me and hopefully my experience can make aware some people of the risks involved in this activity.
I went to Xcaret on July the 21st 2020 just about a week ago. I always have been amazed by the life under the water and when I was a child people would ask me what was my dream job to which I would reply without hesitation: scuba diver. In the past I have done many times snorkeling and the activity in Cayman Islands where you go down to the bottom of the ocean thru a ladder and walk in the ocean floor maybe 5-7 meters deep but never did fully scuba diving per say.
As you probably know when you do the Snuba activity in Xcaret the activity leaders explain you the equipment and certain signs to communicate with them under the water, all this happens while you are on the deck after that the boat travels for three minutes. You go inside the ocean and practice putting your head down under the water back and forward for a few minutes before you go down 7 meters deep.
When I started descending maybe a bit over three meters I heard a loud sound inside of my head on the right hand side similar to a gunshot. The sensation and the horror felt after that is hard to describe: it was a combination of feeling going side ways like a spiral losing any sense of balance, feeling strong nausea that was pushing me to vomit, which I avoided due to my breathing tube and the feeling that I was going to go unconcious, my eyes felt like they wanted to close and my body wanted to sleep. The only thing I could think at that moment was: if I vomit I won’t be able to breathe, if I pass out by the time the activity leader realizes it I will be in the other side, so with all my strength I fought those sensations and made the sign to my leader to wait for me. I must say that on this initial period of transition he stayed right in front of me.
After a couple of minutes and lots of burping that came out of nowhere but that certainly helped me to deep breath and avoid vomiting I could stabilize and then adventure started, oh boy it was amazing looking at all those chorals, fish families, colors, majestic no words can describe it, I was living my dream!
After 25 minutes we went up and the sensation of nausea came stronger than ever I was glad I could put my head out of the water and put my tube away, at that time all the vomit contained came out fiercely two times.
I felt ok just the sensation of water inside of my right ear this was about 1:30 pm and my wife and I continued to visit the park until 9:40 pm I noticed balance problems and extreme sensibility towards loud sounds which I particularly remember in the Aviario, man those birds felt like they were piercing my ears.
Long story made short:
Next morning over my pillow I saw a liquid with blood and a a yellow mix so I went to see a doctor.
The outcome:
I broke my eardrum membrane.
Went to the doctor in Cancun and she was extremely surprised when I told her that as a beginner I went scuba diving 7 meters deep with almost no training or certification. On her own words: “beginners should not go further than three netters on their first immersion”. The only thing the Xcaret staff asked us was: Does everyone has experience or done at least snorkeling in the past? In my case the answer was: yes.
4 days after the accident I was really scared to fly back to Houston because the pain raised day after day and so my hearing capability faded away starting that next day.
My wife who is an amazing woman bought me some air equalizer ear plugs for the flight and afternoon consulting with a second doctor he gave us the ok to fly. Needless to say the panic and fear I had by expecting the worst when the plane got ready to take off. Surprisingly I had no extra pain at all.
Today is July the 30th it has been over a week I broke my eardrum membrane and I feel slightly better but not well still I have 20 percent of hearing on my right hand side, the liquid from my ear keeps dripping and the loud sound of my heart day and night along with sometimes vibrations, muffledness inside of my head causing dizziness and headaches. The doctors and my research tell me that the membrane heels by itself in the matter of a few weeks. I am under treatment but this is a serious condition that I don’t whish to my worst enemy. Being a musician it is the worst nightmare that you can’t hear and practice your instruments because the vibrations hurt you.
Based in my experience I do not recommend Snuba if you are not a certified scuba diver or have experience going beyond 3 meters deep. There are concerns about the way that this activity throws you to 7 meters deep with no formal training and only a 15 minute explanation.
I must also say that the Snuba staff offered at the end of the activity to take me to the park doctor which I refused because at that point I had no idea what the problem was and I was convinced that it only was water I side my ear.
Finally I will also point out that other girl from the group mentioned experiencing an explosion inside her ear. I do not know if it was the same outcome for her as we departed and never saw them again.
Please feel free to reach out with any extra questions you may have.

I highly suggest staying at the Occidental resort and going here! My fiancé and I had a 5 day trip and went to XCARET for 3 days of it. Endless fun. Be sure to go to the Aviary and Butterfly Sanctuary. They are unbelievable.
