Our family (7, 10 and 13 years old kids) visit Xel-Ha (pronounced Shel-Ha) in December 2018. We had originally booked an ocean snorkeling tour through Sunwing…but realized through talking with people (and looking at the ocean), that snorkelling in the ocean was not going to be the best experience (too choppy). That being said, we have snorkeled in the ocean in the Puerto Morales area in July and it was fantastic. So..it the ocean is calm…there are amazing reefs to see for much cheaper than Xel-Ha. If not, this makes an amazing day out.
It’s easily booked from any resort in Cancun or the Riviera. It makes a long day, as it takes roughly an hour from just outside Playa. So, your day will be 7:30AM-7:30PM. You can eat breakfast at Xel-Ha…and it’s equivalent to a resort buffet (all you can eat/drink is included in the fee).
Xel-Ha is an inlet river with tons of areas to snorkel/play…and you are guaranteed to see some decent fish. There is a “Stingray experience” you can pay for….but as a tip, none of the stingrays are ‘contained’ (they just come by that area to be fed). So, if you just snorkel around the stingray area, you will see stingrays anyway. Not the same for the dolphin experience (these are trapped dolphins – disappointed to see this from a preservation perspective). All other smaller fish are ‘wild’ from the ocean inlet.
If your kids have decent endurance for walking/swimming, this is a great trip. If you still need a stroller…I’d pass up on this trip. It is a lot of walking/biking (various size bikes) and swimming. Tons of fun though…and you never feel rushed as part of a tour group (you just go where you want in the park).
You are supposed to wear biodegradable sunscreen in this park (as the other stuff kills the reefs). No one polices this, but we did but some from the gift shop as not to add to the chemicals in the water.
Lockers are included with your entry fee, and there are many throughout the park. You’ll want to bring: sandals to walk/bike in, a change of clothes for the ride home, a waterproof camera. Be careful jumping off the cliff with a strapped on gopro….many people lost theirs in the water (it’s not too deep to dive and get it though).
Tip: Go to the slide first thing in the morning. You likely won’t want to ride it more than once. We went right after breakfast and didn’t wait…later in the day there was a 60 min wait for it.
I wouldn’t bring a tube down the river…instead opt to snorkel (you’ll have a life jacket anyway). There’s lots of cool rocks and caverns to explore snorkeling…which is tough to do with a tube. You’ll also want to get out to do cliff jumping, zip lining etc….and it’s more of a pain when you have a tube. If you want a tube half-way, you’ll find an abandoned one somewhere anyway.
A very tiring (and expensive) day…but totally worth it.

Xel-Ha is a great way to spend a day in the Tulum area. Everyone in the family, from pre-teen to grandma enjoyed it. The park is a unique, clean and well run.

This natural aquarium is a must see. I recommend waiting until the kids are around 10 and up. You don’t have to worry so much about them as you snorkel. The lighthouse water slide was very cool. We really liked the lazy river and snorkeling. The kids loved the zip lines and ropes course. We spent the day exploring. There is so much to see. I recommend getting the picture package after you make sure you take as many pics as possible. Oh and the cliff jumping was thrilling for all! It was a great trip. We highly recommend.

If you like all you can eat and drink, this place is good. Lots of choices in food.
Snorkeling is interesting… The mix of sale & fresh water …
Not the place to go if you like quiet and fully natural. There is a giant water slide marring the landscape and shoreline.
Great place for those with little/medium size kids. LOTS of fun things to do.
Don’t leave your stuff in the lockers near the restaurant…SO busy..there are other lockers and showers.
Snorkrls, fins, etc. provided.
You can take a collectivo to this place.

This was our 3rd trip to Xel-ha, as others have said – it’s expensive but worth it. It’s a full day (11-12 hours) but the park has all you can eat/drink. With your entry, there is snorkelling (fins, mask, tube provided), light-house slide, kids park, kids park water obstacle course, river tubing/snorkelling, and adult water obstacle course. There are lots of other paid activities too (e.g. Dolphins, Manatee, Sting Rays, Snuba, etc.). We’ve opted for Snuba the past two years and really enjoy it (but it was better last year, apparently the rain storms impacted this years experience).
