Booked as a excursion with TUI. Pickup was in a clean well organised bus.
We were given the option of either a standard ticket or a ‘plus’ ticket (which we opted for) the only real difference is you are provided with a free locker for your stay , snorkelling hire (which we didn’t use) and lunch/soft drinks included. The price difference was $30 (which was the same price as the walk in cost at the buffets) so unless you are planning to use the snorkelling gear there is no major advantage (but also no disadvantage)
The main thing to do is swim the underground caves. These are easy to navigate, even for less confident swimmers. Life jackets are provided (and mandatory) I would STRONGLY recommend swimming shoes as the bottom of these caves can be rocky.
If you don’t have a locker, it’s very simple. At the entrance to the rivers, your belongings are locked into a bag, you are given the key, you then collect your bag at the end of the river (all Rivers start and end at the same place)
There are three rivers to swim. All take 45mins – 1hr to drift along at a sedate pace.
For the squeamish, there are bats in the ‘Mayan river’ but only in one place and they don’t bother you.
Aside from that there is lots to see and do. Although we just swam the rivers and went back to the hotel on the well organised transport
Not cheep, but very unique

The floats were a must, we had the most fun there! Most activities within the park were rather expensive, so we didn’t do many. Lots to take in, you may want to do two days. Views were amazing. Lots of animals.

We initially had mixed feelings about visiting Xcaret park as we were travelling with our 2-year old and 10-month old daughters. We had heard differencing opinions from our resort concierge about taking young kids there, but ultimately decided to give it a try. We booked the Plus option with roundtrip transportation from Playa Del Carmen and a buffet lunch. I highly recommend renting a stroller for young kids if you don’t bring your own. We paid about $15 to rent a stroller for the day. When you first enter the park it seems like you need to go through the gift shop to get in. Don’t be fooled! Before the gift shop there is a path to the left that will take you into the “brown path” area with the horses, art museum, and church. This path is so much faster and easier than pushing through the crowd in the gift shop.
The park is laid out with different colour trails that make it virtually impossible to get lost. You will do a ton of walking, so be sure to wear something comfortable.
The Sky Tower is a great way to get an aerial view of the park and surrounding area, and bonus: it’s air-conditioned!
We enjoyed the Paradise River boat cruise, though found it a little hokey with the music and fake background noise. Also, the boat guide doesn’t do the tour in English so I feel like we didn’t get as much out of it.
We decided not to see any of the daytime shows as we had heard they are all part of the larger, 2-hour, nighttime “Spectacular” show. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend the Dinner + Show option. It’s about $65 USD per person but gives you great, priority seating with seat cushions and a delicious 6-course set menu dinner. While we didn’t find the seats very comfortable even with the cushions, I imagine sitting in the regular hard seats for two hours would be even worse.
It was very easy to find our bus back to the resort after the show. There are tons of “Experience Xcaret” guides outside the park telling you where to find the right bus.
Though the kids were completely exhausted by dinnertime, we had a great day.

Only saw at night – fantastic atmosphere although it was all in Spanish – would have loved to see it in the day to float in the boat.
